The Battle of Co-hosts: Can the fearless USA upset a nervy West Indies?

The Battle of Co-hosts: Can the fearless USA upset a nervy West Indies? The USA and West Indies will compete to secure their first points in the Super Eight campaign. Will the Caribbean team emerge victorious, or will the American underdogs keep exceeding expectations? Today, we strive to answer this very question itself. Each of the co-hosts has experienced a loss in their initial Super 8 matches. The USA was defeated by the undefeated South Africa, a dominant force in the competition. Similarly, defending champions England brought an end to West Indies’ undefeated streak. Therefore, the paths of these teams in the tournament are not without challenges, and it is clear that another defeat could bring them to the brink of elimination. To predict who will witness this elimination is difficult as there are no T20 head-to-head records between these teams. Thus, we can only take their previous performances in the T20 World Cup 2024 into account. After getting off to a great start against England, the West Indies batting unit suffered a late collapse, as they managed to put up 180 runs on the board. Philip Salt’s unbeaten knock of 87 runs off 47 balls made sure that England started off their Super Eight campaign with a victory. On the other hand, USA went down fighting against the mighty Proteas, chasing a total of 195 runs. Andries Gous scored an unbeaten knock of 80 runs which kept the co-hosts in hunt, however, it was Kagiso Rabada’s spell which helped South Africa claim the victory. West Indies bowlers need to step up against a resilient USA batting unit West Indies’ batting department put on a mediocre effort with Johnson Charles and Nicholas Pooran scoring almost run a ball against England. To add to their woes Brandon King got injured and his participation is in doubt. In the bowling department, the pacers are expected to step up on Friday evening. Romario Shepherd and Alzarri Joseph were taken to the cleaners by England batters, whereas, the spin department did considerably well. Thus, if the Caribbean batters manage to convert their knocks like in their earlier games, and if the pacers get rid of their woes it will be the Indies team that will win the encounter. For the United States, both Saurabh Netravalkar and Harmeet Singh impressed with their economical bowling efforts. If Aaron Jones and Andries Gous continue to perform like in their earlier matches, and if the bowling department sees a collective effort, then the young USA team may just manage to topple the West Indies in this encounter. Moreover, the American batting department may also see a boost with the return of their skipper Monank Patel adding to the probability of them winning. Thus, whether the USA can leverage their fearless spirit to upset the mighty West Indies remains to be seen, but one thing this battle of co-hosts promises to do is to put on a thrilling spectacle for us cricket viewers. 2024 ICC T20 World Cup: Super Eight Group Two Predictions

2024 ICC T20 World Cup: Super Eight Group Two Predictions With the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Group stages concluding, the competition will only increase as teams move into the Super Eight stage. In Group II, the USA, England, West Indies, and South Africa will battle it out. Speculations arise on which team will progress to the semifinals. Will it be South Africa with an unbeatable streak, West Indies known for their strong hitters, England who survived despite challenges from the rain gods itself, or the USA, the underdog team that defied expectations? Well before discussing predictions let’s have a quick look at the schedule for Group Two along with their timings and venues. S. No. Teams Date IST time Local time Venue 1 United States of America Vs South Africa June 19, 2024 08:00 PM 14:30 GMT Sir Vivan Richards Stadium, Antigua 2 England Vs West Indies June 20, 2024 6:00 AM 00:30 GMT Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, St. Lucia 3 England Vs South Africa  June 21, 2024 08:00 PM 14:30 GMT Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, St. Lucia 4 United States of America Vs West Indies June 22, 2024 06:00 AM 00:30 GMT Kensington Oval, Barbados 5 United States of America Vs England June 23, 2024 08:00 PM 14:30 GMT Sir Vivan Richards Stadium, Antigua 6 West Indies Vs South Africa June 24, 2024 6:00 AM 00:30 GMT Kensington Oval, Barbados Now let’s dive into the predictions for Group Two. England and West Indies are favored to advance to the semifinals based on their all-time success in this format of cricket. While West Indies won the 2012 and 2016 editions, England won the 2010 and 2022 editions. All other teams have managed to win only once at most. Thus both of these teams have the potential to win taking their experiences into account.  England and West Indies favorites to progress into the semifinals Both England and West Indies have a significant advantage in their lineup, with their batsmen and bowlers performing consistently. The English batsmen are in serious form as evident from their performances in the group stages. While Jos Buttler and Phil Salt performed in the earlier matches, it was Harry Brook and Jonny Bairstow who helped them cross the finishing line against Namibia. All their bowlers are performing consistently as well, especially Jofra Archer who has just returned to the England squad after sustaining injuries previously. The West Indies is not behind England either, if not ahead that is. Firstly, the Men in Maroon managed to defeat Australia in warm-up matches by putting up almost 260 runs on the scoreboard. Secondly, their performance in the group stage was consistent as well. All of their players are backing up each other and performing in case someone in the team fails. It was Rosten Chase’s brilliant all-around performance that led his side to victory against Papua New Guinea. Then it was Akeal Hoein’s five-wicket haul which forced Uganda to wrap up its batting at a meager score of 39.  Next, it was Sherfane Rutherford’s batting and Alzarri Joseph’s bowling that helped the West Indies team to knock New Zealand out of the tournament. Thus as a team, the West Indian players are scary. On top of their performances in the recent matches, they possess the home-ground advantage in the later stage of the tournament as well. Thus, their players will be well aware of the pitch and weather conditions which may significantly boost their performance. Both the USA and South Africa have shown promise too in this tournament but may not win when paired up with the above-mentioned teams. This is because, on the one hand, The American side suffers from a significant lack of experience and on the other hand the African side often fails to convert in the later stages of cricket tournaments despite their strong group stage performance. However, upsets are evident in sports and hence we will have to wait and watch what this tournament has in store for us cricket enthusiasts.  Also Read: “This is the lowest point for Pakistan, it can’t get any lower,” Imad Wasim on Pakistan’s T20 World Cup exit

“This is the lowest point for Pakistan, it can’t get any lower,” Imad Wasim on Pakistan’s T20 World Cup exit

“This is the lowest point for Pakistan, it can’t get any lower,” Imad Wasim on Pakistan’s T20 World Cup exit Pakistan have been knocked out from the group stages of the T20I World Cup, in what could be termed as one of their worst performances at an ICC Event. The runner-ups of the previous edition were expected to breeze past the first round, and make a deep run in the tournament. Pakistan have hugely underperformed at the marquee event held in the West Indies and the USA, given that T20 cricket is their strongest format. Their loss to United States can be termed as one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history. Moreover, they squandered a match after being on the cusp of victory against their arch-rivals India. Pakistan’s failure to sustain its campaign is partly because of the team’s lackluster performance and partly because of bad fate. We do have some thoughts from Imad Wasim, the Pakistani all-rounder who came out of retirement just for this World Cup after quitting all forms of cricket in 2023, however, it is unclear what adjustments would be made to the team following this loss. Imad accepted that it was the team’s one of the worst performances. “Yes, this is the lowest point. You can’t go any lower than this. That’s the fact,” said Imad, as quoted by Cricbuzz. However, while expressing his disappointment over his team’s defeat Imad also maintained the stance that his team would continue to play with dedication, especially against Ireland. “We will go out there and play for the country and play for the pride of our country which we already did but unfortunately the results we can’t control it. Yeah, but we go out there and play like it’s a World Cup game”, he remarked. Pakistan eventually managed to defeat Ireland by three wickets, as they ended their campaign with two wins and two defeats, finishing third in Group A. Imad Wasim regrets his performance against rivals India Imad Wasim’s performance went under the radar as well, especially his performance against India, as he was unable to capitalize on his matchup against Axar Patel. He was promoted up the order to stabilize the chase, but he struggled to find momentum, despite managing many tense finishes in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). “The game plan was to take the ball deep. The wicket was not good to play. It was a little difficult. Unfortunately, my plan was going according to plan but not execution. I will regret this and I still regret it. But this is life. Sometimes you make mistakes,” said Imad on the match against India. Addressing the speculations regarding his and Mohammad Amir’s retirement again, he didn’t deny them and stated, “As far as retirement is concerned, there’s a match tomorrow. We’ll play a match. And, after that, we’ll think about it and sort out whatever we need to.” Though Imad defended Pakistan’s approach in the run chase against India, he blamed the loss on the entire team. He stressed the importance of collective responsibility and stated that it was because of the team’s collective effort that the team failed to convert its matches into wins despite having winning momentum on their side at many points in these matches. T20 World Cup 2024, Group A Qualification scenario: What happens if Pakistan defeat India?

T20 World Cup 2024, Group A Qualification scenario: What happens if Pakistan defeat India? USA scripted one of the biggest wins in the history of the T20I World Cup, as they defeated Pakistan in their second Group A encounter. Making their first appearance at the T20 World Cup, the hosts defeated the Asian giants in the Super Over to make it two wins from two matches. USA defeated Canada in their opening match, and followed it up with an incredible outing against the 2009 T20 World Champions. This result has left Group A wide open, as Pakistan could be looking at an early exit from the tournament if they lose to India on 9th June. India started off their campaign in style, defeating Ireland by eight wickets. The Blues would look to inflict further misery on their arch-rivals on Sunday, as a defeat could really hamper Pakistan’s chances of going into the Super Eight. What happens if Pakistan defeats India? Pakistan is among the most unpredictable sides in T20 Cricket. On their day, they can defeat any opponent, such is the quality in their squad. Hence, Pakistan could very much defeat India on Sunday, as the match will be played on a tricky New York pitch once again. Pakistan claimed their first ever World Cup win over India at the 2021 T20 World Cup, hammering their rivals by 10 wickets. If Babar Azam and Co. manage to claim a victory over India, the battle for the top two spots will go down to the last matchday. USA have claimed two victories already, and they are expected to win another match against Ireland. The hosts are expected to lose to India, hence they will end the group stage with three wins and one defeat. Meanwhile, Pakistan’s win over India on Sunday could bring them right back into the mix, as they should claim victories over Ireland and Canada in their final two matches. Meanwhile for Team India, they will certainly fancy their chances against USA and Canada. Hence, Pakistan, India and USA could all end up with six points, and the top two spots will be decided by net run rate. Also Read: ICC T20 World Cup 2024: Three potential upsets in the first round

ICC T20 World Cup 2024: Three potential upsets in the first round

ICC T20 World Cup 2024: Three potential upsets in the first round The T20I World Cup is just around the corner, as West Indies and the United States get ready to host the ninth edition of the event. For the first time in the history of the T20 World Cup, we will see as many as 20 teams participating in the event. The tournament has been divided into three phases- with the first phase being the Group stage, followed by a Super Eight stage, and concluded by the knockouts. This means that there could be more than a couple of upsets in the tournament this year. We are no strangers to witnessing upsets in the T20I World Cups, and this year promises to bring plenty of more drama and entertainment for the fans. Moreover, this is a really great opportunity for some of the minnow nations to prove themselves on the big stage, and gain recognition from the fans and the cricketing community in general. In this article, we look at three potential upsets in the first round of the T20I World Cup. South Africa vs Netherlands : Group D This fixture surely makes the top of our list. Is Netherlands defeating South Africa even considered an upset now, given how their last two World Cup encounters have fared? I guess not. Netherlands shocked the Proteas in the Group Stages of the 2022 T20I World Cup, which ended their aspirations of qualifying for the semifinals of the event. The Dutchmen compounded the misery on the Proteas, after they defeated them once again in the 50-over World Cup held in India last year. This makes it two in two for Netherlands, who come to life when they are up against South Africa. Cashing a score of 159, the Proteas fell 13 runs short of the target against the Dutch in the 2022 T20I World Cup. As discussed earlier, South Africa losing to the the European side should no longer be a surprise, however, given the strength of their squad, it still qualifies as a big upset. South Africa boast of some big players on the T20 circuit currently, which includes the likes of Heinrich Klassen, David Miller, Aiden Markram among many others. On paper, they are way superior to the Netherlands, who have been the party spoilers for South Africa off-late. Pakistan vs Ireland : Group A This fixture has plenty of history, dating way back to 2007. Pakistan suffered one of their most surprising defeats in their World Cup history, when they lost to Ireland at the 2007 ODI World Cup. From then on, Ireland have developed a reputation of being the giant killers. In the previous edition of the T20I World Cup, Ireland defeated the eventual champions England on DLS method. This proved to be England’s only defeat of the tournament, as they went on to win every single match after that setback. Ireland have already secured a victory over Pakistan a couple of weeks ago in the first of the three-match T20I series they played against each other. Pakistan won the series 2-1, however, this could be a huge boost for Ireland heading into the World Cup. Moreover, given Pakistan’s tendency to underperform consistently at World Cups, this leaves a huge door open for the European side. Pakistan were defeated by Zimbabwe in the 2022 T20I World Cup, which left them hanging by a thread in the tournament. However, they did manage to reach the finals, where they eventually lost to England. Ireland have plenty of quality and experience in their ranks, led by their skipper Paul Stirling. The likes of Andrew Balbirnie, Harry Tector and Mark Adair could really make an impact against the 2009 T20I World Cup champions. Hence, we believe Ireland really have a shot at upsetting Pakistan. England vs Scotland : Group B England open their T20I World Cup campaign against Scotland on June 4th. The defending champions have been prone to being at the receiving end of upsets in World Cup events. From losing to Ireland in the 2011 World Cup to losing to Ireland again in the 2022 T20I World Cup, England can be a really unpredictable team in such events. England’s most surprising defeat in the T20 World Cup till date has to be their 45-run defeat at the hands of Netherlands in 2014. The two-time champions were bundled out for just 88 runs, while chasing a score of 144 runs. Scotland have some seasoned campaigners in their squad, which includes the likes of Richie Berrington, George Munsey and Matthew Cross who also played the 2021 T20I World Cup. They also defeated West Indies in the qualifying stages of the 2022 edition of the event, but lost to Zimbabwe and Ireland as they failed to make it to the round-robin stage. An upset looks highly unlikely, but we believe Scotland have the personnel to deliver in the first match of their campaign against England. “We played like invincibles throughout the season,” Shreyas Iyer delighted as KKR thrash Hyderabad to lift their third IPL title

“We played like invincibles throughout the season,” Shreyas Iyer delighted as KKR thrash Hyderabad to lift their third IPL title Kolkata Knight Riders completely outplayed Sunrisers Hyderabad in the finals to lift their third IPL title. The Shreyas Iyer led side claimed an emphatic eight-wicket victory over Hyderabad, as they brought a fitting end to their campaign. KKR skipper Shreyas Iyer heaped praise on his side, stating that they played like invincibles throughout the course of the tournament. He stated that each individual has stood up for the team when it mattered. Kolkata Knight Riders restricted the Sunrisers Hyderabad to a total of just 113 runs in the first innings, as they chased down the total in just 10.3 overs, with eight wickets to spare. Venkatesh Iyer impressed with the bat once again, scoring a quickfire 50 which helped his side release the early pressure. “Absolutely comprehensive. This is what we demanded from the team and every individual. They stood up to the right occasion and the feeling is hard to express. It (wait) was so long, longer than the match. We played like invincibles throughout the season,” said Shreyas Iyer in his post match speech. “There’s so much to cherish right now. It is pleasing, the performance has been flawless throughout. I am running out of words right now. We have been tremendous from game one, we stepped up today. All we demanded from ourselves was to back each other whatever the situation is,” he added. “He stepped up to the right occasion” : Shreyas Iyer on Mitchell Starc Mitchell Starc got off to an absolute horrific start this season, as he was taken to the cleaners. However, he stepped up for his team in the second half of the season, making vital contributions in both the playoff matches against Sunrisers Hyderabad. After being awarded the Player of the Match in Qualifier 1, the Australian pacer picked up two wickets in the final, conceding just 14 runs in his three over spell. He removed the in-form Rahul Tripathi and Abhishek Sharma, as he ended the season on a terrific note. “That’s when all the big players stand up, right! It was a high-pressure game and he’s been so good off the field. He’s never shown any complacency in his work ethics. He stepped up to the right occasion,” Iyer said on Starc. Andre Russell also had a terrific tournament with the ball, picking up as many as 19 wickets. The West Indian all-rounder delivered with the ball once again in the finals, picking up three wickets in the final stages of the innings. In fact, five KKR bowlers took at least 17 wickets or more, which speaks volumes about their domination this season. Former English cricketer makes Virat Kohli retirement claim: “I think that may take Virat away from cricket”

Former English cricketer makes Virat Kohli retirement claim: “I think that may take Virat away from cricket” Former English cricketer and captain Michael Vaughan has made an interesting statement in regards to Virat Kohli’s retirement from cricket. The Indian batter has been in magnificent form in the past 12 months, finishing as the top run getter in the 50-over World Cup last year. The 35-year-old has also claimed the Orange Cap in IPL 2024, scoring over 700 runs. Michael Vaughan believes that there is no reason for Virat Kohli to retire in the next couple of years, given his current form. However, the Englishman opined about the personal life of Virat Kohli, as he believes that could be one of the reasons behind his retirement in the next two or three years. Virat Kohli recently had a second child, after having his first child in 2021. Hence, personal priorities and requirements could bring an early halt to the batter’s career. “A brilliant season. You talk about retirement with Virat Kohli, I look at this in a way that he can play for long. He is that fit. Unless his mind goes and he’s obviously got a young family now. In two-three years’ time, everything changes, and he just wants to spend quiet time; I completely get that,” Vaughan said on Cricbuzz. Michael Vaughan reveals why he thinks Virat Kohli could retire early Virat Kohli skipped the five-match Test series between India and England in lead up to the IPL. The Indian batter spent some quality time with his family in the United Kingdom, as his wife Anushka Sharma and himself awaited the birth of their second child. Virat Kohli was quoted saying in a couple of interviews that he absolutely loved his time during the short break. Hence, Michael Vaughan thinks that this could influence the Indian batter’s decision on his retirement. “During his time away from the India vs England Test series, I believe he went to London and led a normal life. I’ve read a few of his comments and quotes and he just absolutely adored that normal life. I think that may take Virat away from cricket, like he just wants to go and have a quiet time for a while,” said Vaughan. Virat Kohli scored 741 runs in IPL 2024, as Royal Challengers Bengaluru were knocked out in the Eliminator by Rajasthan Royals. The 35-year-old will be back in the regular blue jersey, as he is all set to represent India in the upcoming T20I World Cup which is scheduled to start from June 2nd in the West Indies and USA. “Dinesh Karthik was clearly out. Completely unfair to RR” : Ravi Shastri and cricket experts slam poor umpiring

“Dinesh Karthik was clearly out. Completely unfair to RR here” : Ravi Shastri and cricket experts slam poor umpiring There was no shortage of controversy in the IPL Eliminator between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Rajasthan Royals. Dinesh Karthik was given out LBW by the on-field umpire, as RCB seemed to have lost their sixth wicket in the first inning. However, Dinesh Karthik had no option but to review the decision, since his team could have been reduced to a score of 120 odd runs for the loss of six wickets. The third umpire overturned the on-field call, when the ball clearly seemed to be hitting the pad first. The third umpire seemed to have quickly made his decision, as there was a spike seen when the ball was near to the bat. The call was made in less than 30 seconds, as cricket experts fumed at the umpire’s decision. As different angles confirm, the spike was heard because of the bat touching the pad. “Dinesh Karthik was clearly out. Completely unfair to RR here. Umpires should have checked the decision 4-5 times before giving the decision,” said Ravi Shastri on air. Cricket experts lash out at hasty umpiring in IPL Eliminator Dinesh Karthik was given a lifeline, as he had plenty of overs to do the damage he usually does in the business end of the innings. However, the RCB veteran failed to do much damage, being dismissed for 11 runs out of 13 balls. Dinest Karthik struggled out in the middle, as did most of the RCB batters through the middle phase of the innings. “The bat has hit the pad, the bat has not hit the ball,” said Sunil Gavaskar. “There was no bat. If there was, Dinesh would have taken DRS straight away,” wrote Irfan Pathan on X. Royal Challengers Bengaluru managed to put up 172 runs on the board, courtesy of a brilliant late cameo from Mahipal Lomror. Swpanil Singh did some damage in the final over as well to help RCB finish with a respectable total. “People in India just always try to find a reason not to pick Virat Kohli” : Ricky Ponting says star Indian batter is irreplaceable

“People in India just always try to find a reason not to pick Virat Kohli” : Ricky Ponting says star Indian batter is irreplaceable Former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting has been left surprised by Indian fans’ attitude towards Virat Kohli. The Indian batter is all set to represent his national side in his sixth T20I World Cup campaign in June. However, there some question marks around his selection, with his strike rate being brought into question. However, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma laughed off such claims, stating that this was not even among the points discussed at the selection meeting. Ricky Ponting has stated that Virat Kohli would be the first name on his team sheet, and his experience and class makes him irreplaceable. Virat Kohli has been the top run getter in three of the last four ICC T20I World Cup campaigns. “He (Kohli) is the first pick for me for India. So, class and experience like that, you can’t replace. It’s funny with Virat. I think people in India just always try to find a reason not to pick him or a reason why he’s maybe not as good as some of these other guys in the T20 game,” Ponting said in a conversation with ICC. Ricky Ponting opines on India’s batting order at the T20I World Cup Ricky Ponting has opined on Team India’s batting order at the World Cup. He believes that the management has a couple of decisions to make, which involves deciding Virat Kohli’s batting position. Yashasvi Jaiswal has been opening the batting with skipper Rohit Sharma in leadup to the marquee event, however, Ponting believes that Virat Kohli will be promoted to the top of the order. “So they’ve got a decision to make with Jaiswal (batting position), but I’m pretty sure that they’ll go with Kohli and Rohit Sharma (as openers). He can play his role at the top. And if you’ve got the right guys around him scoring (like) Suryakumar (Yadav)… Rohit Sharma’s going to have a high strike rate. These other guys can go in there and play their way,” he added. Ricky Ponting also backed Virat Kohli’s ability to deliver in big games, just as he has been doing over the years. He delivered a stunning unbeaten knock of 82 runs against Pakistan at the 2022 T20I World Cup in Australia. The Indian batter is in middle of a terrific IPL campaign, as he is the current owner of the Orange Cap. He has amassed over 700 runs, and looks in solid touch ahead of the T20I World Cup. India have been drawn in Group A, alongside arch rivals Pakistan. They will open their campaign against Ireland, before facing Pakistan in New York on 9th June.

“Everything is fake” : Rohit Sharma rubbishes talks of meeting with Ajit Agarkar and Rahul Dravid ahead of T20I World Cup

“Everything is fake” : Rohit Sharma rubbishes talks of meeting with Ajit Agarkar and Rahul Dravid ahead of T20I World Cup Rohit Sharma has issued a staunch clarification in regards to team India’s selection ahead of the T20I World Cup in June. There were rumors circulating last week that the Indian skipper, alongside the chief selector and the coach met to discuss about India’s probable squad for the event. According to the news in the media, it was claimed that Hardik Pandya would be only selected in the lineup if he bowls more often in the IPL. As for Virat Kohli, he would open the batting for the side, alongside Rohit Sharma. This would mean that Yashasvi Jaiswal would be dropped from the side following his poor start to the IPL campaign. However, Rohit Sharma has asked fans not to believe such rumors, and labelled it as ‘totally’ fake news. In his recent podcast with Adam Gilchrist and Michael Vaughan, the Indian captain denied meeting Ajit Agarkar and Rahul Dravid. Rohit Sharma labels recent rumors as ‘fake’ news Rohit Sharma further explained that Ajit Agarkar is currently on his vacation in Dubai, whereas, Rahul Dravid is enjoying his time off with his family. He stated that the Indian coach was in Mumbai in the previous week, however, he was watching his son play club cricket. “I haven’t met anyone. Ajit Agarkar is somewhere in Dubai playing golf and Rahul Dravid is actually watching his kids play in Bengaluru,” Rohit told Michael Vaughan and Adam Gilchrist on the Club Prairie Fire podcast. “He [Dravid] was in Mumbai but he got him [the son] to play on a red-soil wicket at CCI. That’s about it. We haven’t met, to be honest. I think in today’s day and age, unless you hear it from either myself or Rahul himself or Ajit himself or someone from BCCI coming and talking in front of the camera, everything is fake.” The Indian team for the upcoming World Cup is expected to be announced by the end of the month. There are several question marks over the final squad, with Rishabh Pant regaining his full fitness. Dinesh Karthik has been in sublime form this IPL season, whereas, Rinku Singh has been a consistent performer over the past year.
