“We’ve got the players to not only be competitive, but to win a major trophy” : Lee Carsley sets sight for a permanent role as England head coach

“We’ve got the players to not only be competitive, but to win a major trophy” : Lee Carsley sets sight for a permanent role as England head coach England’s only major trophy came in 58 years ago, winning the 1966 World Cup. Since then, the national team has played in only two finals, in the Euro 2020 and Euro 2024 under Gareth Southgate, amidst making many deep runs in tournaments. But things are once again seeming to be looking up for the Three Lions, as Gareth Southgate’s successor has arrived with 2-0 wins against the Republic of Ireland and Finland in the UEFA Nations League games. Lee Carsley is currently only an interim manager being promoted after good performances with England’s U-21 team, but these victories will certainly boost up his chances of getting the permanent role. Lee Carsley was recently asked on how he feels getting the ‘Impossible Job’, the reference being the 1994 documentary of Graham Taylor’s time as the England coach. Although, his role may well be an impossible one as it is one of the most difficult jobs for any coach, due to the criticism and scrutiny given to them by media and fans. “I think it’s a really good job, it’s a job where, when you look at different opportunities, the first thing you think is: ‘Can you win? Can you be in a position where you can win?’ This job definitely ticks that box. We’ve got the players to not only be competitive, but to win a major trophy,” said the interim manager. “We’re trying to make the most of it” : John Stones on working with Lee Carsley Gareth Southgate used to receive a lot of criticism for his playstyle, with media and fans complaining about the lack of fluidity and the quality of attack in the final third. This was a fair piece of criticism, as England failed to manage to threaten the penalty box and were one of the worst attacking sides in the Euros, even after having players like Harry Kane, Phil Foden, Bukayo Saka and Jude Bellingham at their disposal. Lee Carsley has brought out a change in the attacking style, which was showcased in the two concluded Nations League games, with players moving forward more freely than before. Manchester City defender John Stones also felt the same way, when he was asked about the changes made by Carsley. “Building up from the back, trying to get the lads to show their qualities on the ball and have that patience and belief that they show at their clubs and bring it all together as a collective. Everyone has seen a familiar face [Carsley] when we’re at St George’s Park,” said Stones. “We’ve always been crossing paths and getting to work with him, for me personally and the lads feel the same, we’re trying to make the most of it. Lee and his staff have as well, and we’ve got two great results out of it,” the 30-year-old added. While the interim manager has started off well, the Three Lions’ main quest will always be acquiring major trophies. The FA are still on the hunt for getting the services of a star manager, but if Carsley can provide similar performances against bigger teams by the end of his tenure, the permanent role may well be his. The Three Lions will be playing four more Nations League matches in October and November, making it the perfect opportunity for Lee Carsley to showcase his abilities as a manager. “There was a change of project last year” : PSG sporting director reveals the reason of selling Manuel Ugarte to Manchester United

“There was a change of project last year” : PSG sporting director reveals the reason of selling Manuel Ugarte to Manchester United After just a single season with the French giants, Manuel Ugarte is on his way to start his new life with the Red Devils in the Premier League. But many are wondering why PSG let go of the talented midfielder after just one season. Before his departure from Paris, Luis Enrique dropped the Uruguayan from first-team training and squad lineups. He later mentioned PSG were intending to sell him as they plan to let go of players they no longer ‘count on’. Luis Enrique is currently the PSG head coach, but his roots will never change. Formerly the manager of Spain and FC Barcelona, the Spainard likes his players to keep the ball with them as long as possible, trying to play in-behind the defence and let the wingers do their duty. Manuel Ugarte might not be the best suit for Enrique’s possession-based system, and they already possess the likes of Vitinha and youngster Waren Zaire-Emery. PSG sporting director confirms real reason of Manuel Ugarte’s sale amongst other departures Recently, PSG’s sporting director also confirmed this in an interview with Sport Italia, saying the Spanish manager’s needs and wants play an important role in influencing the club’s sporting decisions. “You have to understand the context for (selling) Skriniar, as for Ugarte, there was a change of project last year. A new way of playing.” said Campos. Selling a player termed as unwanted makes sense for both parties, as Ugarte agreed personal terms with Manchester United weeks before the two clubs reached an agreement for him for a total package of 60 million euros, as confirmed by Fabrizio Romano. The Uruguayan was also one of the players who got little to no playing time in the French club’s Champions League campaign last season. But things might be different in his stint with Manchester United, as Erik ten Hag usually likes transitional play, effective use of counter-attacking and pressing ruthlessly up the opponent’s side of the pitch, and the ability of the Uruguayan eating up ground in the midfield while providing quality on the ball may be his key to become a regular in the starting eleven. As for Manchester United themselves, they got their target signing in midfield after beating competition like Chelsea, although, they had to pay a bit more than what most would usually prefer. The 24-year-old returned to the Red Devils’ training after the international break as confirmed by the Dutch manager, and will be looking for his Premier League debut against Southampton this Saturday. “It’s like a class reunion. It’s what I’ve always dreamed of” : Jurgen Klopp returns to Borussia Dortmund for a testimonial match

“It’s like a class reunion. It’s what I’ve always dreamed of” : Jurgen Klopp returns to Borussia Dortmund for a testimonial match After almost a decade, the almost unthinkable happened at the Westfalenstadion, when none other than Jurgen Klopp returned back as a coach, but just for one match. The 57-year-old recently left his beloved Reds and the Anfield in the Premier League, and has been enjoying life after taking a break as a coach. But when you’re Jurgen Klopp, football will never be that far from you. The German icon was morally obliged to make a short return for one last time in the black and yellow colours, where he won consecutive Bundesliga titles in 2011 and 2012, while also reaching the UEFA Champions League final in 2013, where they unfortunately had to deal with a loss against their biggest rivals Bayern Munich. The 57-year-old’s time in Dortmund was special, where many football fans fell in love with his coaching ideology and playstyle. We can also say that Jurgen Klopp made players like Robert Lewandowski, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Marco Reus, Mats Hummels what they are now. Klopp was present on Saturday for a testimonial match for two BVB legends he coached during his time, Lukasz Piszczek and Jakub Blaszczykowski. Over 81,000 fans welcomed Jurgen Klopp in an emotional return The Signal Iduna Park is usually always sold out, as BVB has one of the most passionate group of fans in Europe, but this time seemed extra special. The German coached here from 2008 to 2015 and left with many memories along the way. Over 81,000 fans were present to welcome Jurgen Klopp, who was part of ‘Team Blaszczykowski’ and coached a 5-4 victory against ‘Team Piszczek’. Apart from these legends, Mats Hummels, who left the club this summer on a free transfer to Italian side Roma, was also present along with current manager Nuri Sahin, and the likes of Dede and Roman Weidenfeller also participated in the testimonial match. Fans, players and coaching staff were all on an emotional high, due to reuniting after a very long time. Positive vibes were on full flow, as Klopp addressed how much it meant for him to be back to Dortmund. “It’s like coming home, there are so many great memories. It’s great to see you all again,” Klopp said at the Westfalenstadion. “It’s like a class reunion. It’s what I’ve always dreamed of, meeting up again, having a good time and being able to tell all the stories. A full Signal Iduna Park with great memories for all of us, but above all with the team.” said the 57-year-old. Although Jurgen Klopp is set to take a break from coaching for almost a year, the German manager has not ruled anything out beyond that. Even if we have seen the last of the icon as a manager, he could very well come back to football in some other way or form. “This is something that I always struggled with when I was playing for Ireland” : Lee Carsley on refusing to sing the England national anthem

“This is something that I always struggled with when I was playing for Ireland” : Lee Carsley on refusing to sing the England national anthem Since many years, many English players and coaches have been scrutinized from time to time for failing to sing the national anthem ‘God Save the King’. England interim manager Lee Carsley was the latest to not sing the national anthem before the match. The 50-year-old did not sing the national anthem even when he was a player for Ireland and continued the trend as England U-21 team manager up until now. The former Everton midfielder recently addressed this situation ahead of the UEFA Nations League clash against Ireland and revealed as to why this is the case. “This is something that I always struggled with when I was playing for Ireland, the gap between your warm-up, your coming on to the pitch and the delay with the anthems. So, it’s something that I have never done. I was always really focused on the game and my first actions of the game. I really found that in that period I was wary about my mind wandering off,” said Carsley. “I was really focused on the football and I have taken that into coaching. We had the national anthem with the Under-21s also and I am in a zone at that point. I am thinking about how the opposition are going to set up and our first actions within the game. I fully respect both anthems and understand how much they mean to both countries. It’s something I am really respectful of,” the interim manager added. Many fans have defended Carsley on this, including his former Irish teammate and now football pundit Roy Keane as well. The former Manchester United player said that it was not an issue back in his day and the main priority should be winning games. “We’re talking about people losing their jobs because they don’t sing a national anthem. I played with him at Ireland and he didn’t sing it then and it wasn’t an issue then. The priority is to try and win football matches and that will take care of everything else,” said the 53-year-old. “I’m serious about my work and I’m not singing before a game” : Gary Neville provides his take on not singing the national anthem Meanwhile, Gary Neville previously revealed he did not sing the national anthem to prove a point to FA Chairman George Thompson in 1995, who told him he ‘must’ sing it. “I didn’t sing it the first time I played for England, partly because I thought, I’m serious about my work and I’m not singing before a game. He [Thompson] only ever sought out one conversation with me. Did he want to pick my brains on World Cup preparation? Or ask how the FA could help behind the scenes? No, Mr Thompson wanted to know why I didn’t sing the National Anthem. I’m not being told by some suits what to do,” the football pundit firmly explained. Apart from Carsley and Neville, Liverpool’s Trent Alexander Arnold also refused to sing the anthem in a Nations League clash against Hungary in 2022, where they eventually lost. The right-back received criticism back then as well. Wayne Rooney before receiving the captain’s armband also did not sing the anthem and faced a lot of criticism; but to his luck, an FA spokesperson addressed this situation back in 2012 and said it is not compulsory for a player to sing the national anthem. “Whether a player wishes to sing the national anthem or not is purely a personal choice,” said by an FA spokesperson 12 years ago. Although, in the recently ended Euros, all English players sang the anthem before the games, it seems like singing or not singing is purely a matter of choice and the FA would not mind the latter. But the coaches and players should be ready to face the consequences and scrutiny the media and fans will reflect on them later on. “Imagine what the output of Saka is going to be if he gets a rest here and there” : Rio Ferdinand urges Mikel Arteta to make effective use of Raheem Sterling

“Imagine what the output of Saka is going to be if he gets a rest here and there” : Rio Ferdinand urges Mikel Arteta to make effective use of Raheem Sterling The Gunners secured the signing of former Manchester City and Liverpool player Raheem Sterling on a season long loan deal from Chelsea, when head coach Enzo Maresca told the Englishman that he would not be receiving any minutes with the Blues. Raheem Sterling is a former Premier League winner, who has vast experience in the league and could be a major title defining signing for Mikel Arteta and co. provided they use him right. The 29-year-old is apt at playing on both the wings while also casually playing out behind the striker as well. Apart from his experience and versatility, the Englishman provides squad depth, and that would be helpful for the rest of the attacking options, specifically Bukayo Saka who plays on the right wing. The 22-year-old is Arsenal’s key man in the attack, and plays a huge responsibility covering the right flank while also providing important goal contributions. But fans believe that the Englishman has been overworked this year, especially after the Euros this summer. Most recently, football pundit Rio Ferdinand also mentioned that the player needs rest, and the arrival of Raheem Sterling would help that cause. “He’s been doing this on full throttle, no rest, every game going out there giving mad performances” : Rio Ferdinand On his YouTube channel, the former Manchester United centre-back claimed that this loan deal will reignite Sterling for the better, while also providing Saka some much-needed rest, so that the 22-year-old does not face any long-term repercussions. “I just hope this [the loan deal] reignites him [Sterling] now and he hits the ground running. I think their wide players do need help – Saka’s had so many games, it’ll be nice I think if Arteta can go, ‘You know what let me just let Saka sit out’,” said Ferdinand. “Saka won’t like it, but he’ll say, ‘Just sit out for this one’, and imagine what the output of Saka is going to be if he gets a rest here and there? He’s been doing this on full throttle, no rest, every game going out there giving mad performances, right? Now, he’s got a bit of back-up, you know what it’s like when a man’s got back-up, they get bigger, they feel stronger, they feel better, they deliver more.” the 45-year-old added. Rio Ferdinand also revealed how the prospect of having a Premier League winner can urge the players and give them the extra motivation to win it this time around. “I think that’s what these Arsenal forwards will be sitting there thinking. That’s a big thing as well, what would these Arsenal players be thinking when Sterling walks in? “It’s important what a new signing gives to the changing room. And I think that he comes in and everyone goes, ‘Yes, I cannot wait for this, I’m ready,’” explained Ferdinand. With three matches in, Arsenal is currently in fourth place in the table, with rivals Manchester City, Liverpool and Brighton over them. The Gunners will next play against bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur as soon as the international break ends, and Raheem Sterling could very well debut in the red and white colours for the first time as a substitution for the 22-year-old. “I just want to win every game” : Vincent Kompany expresses his desire of succeeding with Bayern Munich

“I just want to win every game” : Vincent Kompany expresses his desire of succeeding with Bayern Munich The newly updated UEFA Champions League draw’s fixtures were recently unveiled, and the German giants will be facing heavyweight competition from FC Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain among other strong teams. Although they have had massive success against these teams in the past, a new era has started in Munich, with a fairly new coach as well. Manchester City legend Vincent Kompany has had somewhat of a unique start in his coaching career. After getting relegated with Burnley last season, the Belgian received a substantial offer from Bayern Munich to become their head coach. So far down the season, the young manager has done a decent job with the team and has provided balance in the right areas as well. Winning the Bundesliga is not the main concern, as the German giants have done it time and again. The Champions League is a different ball game altogether, and Kompany would need to resolve any major issues before the start of the most coveted club competition. But as far as group stage is concerned, the Bavarians have quite a record in them, securing at least 16 points in the past five seasons while also having a perfect record thrice. Vincent Kompany reveals his thoughts over Bayern Munich’s UCL draw In a recent press conference, the Belgian was asked about his views over the Bavarians’ UCL fixtures. He revealed that he was looking forward to face a variety of teams, but not to pressurize him on each team’s details separately just yet. “I’m looking forward to the games and the variety of teams. Don’t ask me about each team separately. I just want to win every game but I don’t yet know how it’ll all feel with the new system,” said the 38-year-old. Bayern Munich last won the UCL in 2020, where Hansi Flick’s team were far and away the best in the world. Although times have changed now, with a few coaching changes and many star players headed out like Robert Lewandowski, but the Bundesliga heavyweights remain a force to be reckoned with. Vincent Kompany cannot really complain about his current options, as he possesses a squad mix of experience and youth. Harry Kane, Joshua Kimmich, Jamal Musiala, Michael Olise, Manuel Neuer and of course, Thomas Muller will be key players for the Belgian to build the team around this season. After a good start in the Bundesliga, Vincent Kompany’s real test and experience will be displayed in the Champions League, and it will be interesting to see if the 38-year-old can hold the standards created by those before him. “We will use this time to do that and as soon as possible, get him involved” : Mikel Arteta on getting Raheem Sterling up to speed ahead of the international break

“We will use this time to do that and as soon as possible, get him involved” : Mikel Arteta on getting Raheem Sterling up to speed ahead of the international break Raheem Sterling was finally able to find himself a club on deadline day, and to his luck, he is now part of a currently well-oiled team run by Mikel Arteta. The Gunners acquired the Englishman’s services on a simple loan transfer. This was a win-win-win deal for all parties involved, as Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca publicly stated that the 29-year-old will not receive playing time at all this season. Arsenal made quick moves in the final day of the transfer market and were able to strike a deal with their rivals, while paying just about a half of the Englishman’s wages as well. Sterling luckily now has time to adapt to the surroundings of the North London club, as international break came in just at the perfect time for him. The Englishman is a versatile winger who can also play as a striker, and could contribute highly coming off the bench, whether he is at any position in the final third. What Mikel Arteta had to say about Raheem Sterling’s fitness The Englishman has been thoroughly injury prone ever since joining Chelsea from Manchester City, missing more than half of their matches, which has led to a dip in form as well as his market value. With that in mind, his new coach was asked questions related to his fitness, to which the Spainard had a positive reply in favour of the 29-year-old. “Yes, we’ll have to see and speak to him on what he’s been doing and how he’s feeling about it. We have to try to find quick wins to get him up to speed as quick as possible and him understanding what we are looking for from him and the dynamics of the team. We will use this time to do that and as soon as possible, get him involved,” said the 42-year-old (via GOAL). With a two-week international break ahead, Sterling has more than enough time to fit into the Gunners’ team dynamics. Though it should not be that hard, as the experienced veteran has been in the Premier League for 15 years, and has also previously played for top clubs like Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea and now Arsenal. Provided the Spaniard helps get the Englishman back to form, we could see Raheem Sterling in action on September 15, getting some important minutes against Tottenham Hotspur in the much-awaited North London derby. “It doesn’t strike me as an essential signing for Manchester United” : Gary Neville was skeptical over Manchester United’s pursuit of Raheem Sterling

“It doesn’t strike me as an essential signing for Manchester United” : Gary Neville was skeptical over Manchester United’s pursuit of Raheem Sterling The Red Devils have been one of the busiest clubs in the top 5 leagues during the summer transfer window. Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS have made important additions to strengthen the squad overall, with the signings of Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui for defensive duties while also bringing in Joshua Zirkzee for implementing their attacking ways. There have also been major departures to be able to secure these signings, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Hannibal Mejri, Mason Greenwood and Donny van de Beek seeing out from the club. The signings have not stopped though, as United also recently agreed the deal to sign Uruguayan midfielder Manuel Ugarte for a hefty fee, which has led to criticism among the fanbase that whether or not the 23-year-old is worth the price tag. Erik ten Hag would certainly be a happy man regardless, but with the transfer deadline coming up soon, the Red Devils have been linked with yet another star player, although a bit more polarizing than others. Gary Neville opines on why Raheem Sterling was not a good option for Manchester United Ever since his departure from Manchester City two years ago, Raheem Sterling has been facing problems in his career, whether it is due to injuries or in terms of form. The Englishman was also not included in the recent Euros squad, and the last straw came when new Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca publicly stated that the 29-year-old is not in his plans going into the season. Football pundit and former Manchester United skipper Gary Neville also revealed that he is not in favour of the Englishman joining Manchester United this summer due to the already available options they have, although he previously liked working with him in England. “I love Raheem Sterling, I worked with him very closely with England when I was there, but I’m not sure why Manchester United would see that as a piece of business,” said the 49-year-old (via Sky Sports). “Looking at their squad, they’ve got players who they want to get the best out of – they’ve got Amad, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony and Marcus Rashford who play in those areas, if they’re losing faith in one or some of those players, then maybe they would sign Sterling. But it doesn’t strike me as an essential signing for Manchester United. They’ve got four players in those areas who they need to play into form.” Neville added. The Red Devils currently possess a stacked roster and have great backup options available in each position, especially the wings where youngsters Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo are proving themselves every match. Although both Marcus Rashford and Antony have not had the greatest of years, it would have been disrespectful to both of them by signing a 29-year-old Sterling who is coming off a dry stretch himself. “I don’t see what the problem is” : Arsenal legend reacts to Mikel Arteta picking Gabriel Martinelli over Belgian winger

“There will always be competition” : Arsenal legend reacts to Mikel Arteta not dropping Gabriel Martinelli over Belgian winger Over the past couple of seasons, Arsenal have built a solid foundation in their squad, with key players all over the pitch. However, the only area where fans are split between who to start are on the wings, particularly the left wing. While the right wing is thoroughly covered by one of the best in the world in Bukayo Saka, there has been a debate regarding who should start on the left, Gabriel Martinelli or Leandro Trossard. Both these players have shown cases for themselves as to why they should be the one starting over the other. Gabriel Martinelli has had a sturdy couple of seasons, where the Brazilian has shown he can provide quality and width, and always making key in behind runs. Based on eye test, one can say that the 23-year-old proves to be a greater threat than the Belgian, who is clear when it comes to providing goal contributions. Most recently, the 29-year-old came off the bench replacing a struggling Martinelli and scored a quality goal while being the main target man for the rest of the game. David Seaman does not have an issue with starting Gabriel Martinelli over Leandro Trossard After hitting the back of the net and celebrating in a rather unconventional ‘muted’ way, it was revealed by the Gunners manager Mikel Arteta that the Belgian was rather upset for not starting games, but is always happy to provide important contributions whenever he is approached to. Many fans and pundits have argued that the 29-year-old deserves a chance to start over the Brazilian, but former Arsenal goalkeeper and legend David Seaman does not mind seeing the Belgian coming off the bench. “I don’t see what the problem is. There always will be [competition for places]. Even if it’s the other way around, if he [Trossard] starts first, Martinelli would come on. I think we all know that on that [left] side, that’s where we have the balance with Trossard and Martinelli. On the right side, we only have Buyako Saka,” said the Englishman (via Metro). “He’s got credit from last season and the way he performed last season. Mikel Arteta sees him as a more consistent performer from the start,” said the 60-year-old regarding Gabriel Martinelli’s form. Whether Mikel Arteta gives the Belgian his well-deserved start or not is unknown for now, it would not really be surprising if the Spainard does switch the two on a regular basis, depending upon who they are up against and what playstyle is required. Arsenal plays Leandro Trossard’s ex-club Brighton next matchday, where the Belgian would certainly like to prove a point to any of his doubters. “Gio could become very important for us this season” : BVB sporting director gives update on youngster’s future

“Gio could become very important for us this season” : BVB sporting director gives update on youngster’s future Over the years, the Westfalenstadion has seemed like a mid-point for promising young stars to join, develop and leave for a high fee to even bigger clubs, most notably the examples of Ousmane Dembele, Erling Haaland and Jude Bellingham come to mind. But BVB have not yet run out of options as per young stars are considered. USMNT’s Giovanni Reyna was supposed to be the next big thing in American football, but continuous injuries have put a question mark as to if that will ever be the case. The American is a versatile player and can provide a huge boost to any squad if fully fit. But recently, things have not been looking that up for the 21-year-old. The attacking midfielder/winger has been linked with several clubs throughout this summer, after falling down the pecking order and not being able to land a berth in the starting 11, whether it is due to injury issues or related to form. So far this campaign, Reyna has made only one appearance off the bench as regular playing time keeps getting away from him. “I haven’t heard that the player wants to leave” : Sebastian Kehl provides update regarding Reyna’s future After an unsuccessful loan spell in the Premier League with Nottingham Forest, where the American joined during the winter transfer window, he confirmed his desire to stay put in the Black and Yellow brand for now, and continue developing in hopes to get a call for starting games regularly. Club sporting director Sebastian Kehl reconfirmed this recently, and spoke about the rumours of the 21-year-old leaving and how he can still impact games and is an important part of the squad. “He has to accept his role and free himself from it. It was clear when we held the talks in the summer that Gio wanted to take on this role. That there would be enough games where we would need him. We know that he has incredible skills. Gio could become very important for us this season. There are no other thoughts. There’s nothing on the table and I haven’t heard that the player wants to leave,” said Kehl in an interview with BILD. “He worked on himself, worked on his stability, worked on his confidence. His clever movement between the lines and his goal threat – he’s developed that further,” the 44-year-old added. Although nothing has been fully ruled out yet, it does seem like Giovanni Reyna will stay at Dortmund for at least one more season. The summer transfer window is about to close soon as well, and the American will need to make a keen impression in order for his desire to be fulfilled.
