Novak Djokovic shatters another record as he overtakes Roger Federer for most wins at a Grand Slam

Novak Djokovic shatters another record as he overtakes Roger Federer for most wins at a Grand Slam Novak Djokovic did the unthinkable once again, as he came back from 2-1 sets down to defeat Francisco Cerundolo in the last 16 of the French Open. The top seed defeated the Argentine 6-1, 5-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 in a match which saw him struggle with his right knee. Novak Djokovic suffered a minor injury to his right knee halfway through the second set which impacted his mobility on the court. However, just like his victory over Lorenzo Musetti in the third round, the Serbian managed to grind out another five-set victory on Monday. By doing so, he broke the record for most wins at a Grand Slam, passing Roger Federer’s record of 369 wins. Novak Djokovic registered his 370th victory at a Grand Slam, and reached his 59th career quarterfinals at a major event. The Serbian will now face the winner of the other last 16 clash between Casper Ruud and Taylor Frirz. Novak Djokovic escapes another scare to keep French Open dreams alive Novak Djokovic found himself staring at the exit door, with a set and a break down in the fourth set. However, just like he always does, the Serbian managed to turn around things and book a place in the quarterfinals of the French Open once again. The defending champion has a lot of work to do over the course of the next two days, as his right knee looks in a poor condition. The top seed has already played two tight five-set matches over the course of the last 48 hours, which has also put a lot of strain on his physical well-being. Novak Djokovic could face Casper Ruud in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, which could be a rematch of the finals last year. The Serbian started off his last 16 battle in a bright manner, dismantling Francisco Cerundolo in the first set. However, the Argentine came right back into the match, taking the next two sets before Novak Djokovic managed to turn things around. “He was a bit unlucky with the draw” : Novak Djokovic believes Rafael Nadal will be back for the 2025 French Open

“He was a bit unlucky with the draw” : Novak Djokovic believes Rafael Nadal will be back for the 2025 French Open Novak Djokovic believes that Rafael Nadal was unlucky with the 2024 French Open draw. The 14-time Grand Slam champion was pitted against Alexander Zverev in the first round of the tournament. Rafael Nadal suffered a straight sets defeat, which could potentially be his last appearance at the French Open. However, Novak Djokovic thinks otherwise. The Serbian believes that Rafael Nadal will be back at the 2025 French Open. The Spaniard has already stated that he would come back to Paris in a couple of months to compete at the Summer Olympics. Novak Djokovic started his title defence at the French Open without much trouble, as he got the better of Pierre-Hughes Herbert in straight sets in the first round. Speaking to the press after his win, the world number one opined on Nadal’s future at the French Open. “It was great. Iga (Swiatek) was there, (Carlos) Alcaraz was there, and we all wanted to get a glimpse of the atmosphere of that possibly unique moment that could be his last. But it doesn’t appear like that,” said Djokovic. “Yeah, it looks like,” Djokovic when asked if Nadal would compete at Roland Garros next year. Novak Djokovic believes Rafael Nadal played a good match against Alexander Zverev Novak Djokovic opined that Rafael Nadal played a good match against Alexander Zverev despite his straight sets defeat. The Serbian believes that the second and the third set was fiercely competitive, as it could have gone either way. However, the world number one concluded that Alexander Zverev has been in great form off late. The German claimed the Italian Open title a couple of weeks ago, and climbed to number four in the world rankings. Alexander Zverev dominated the match from the first set, dictating rallies from the baseline. “I think he played very well. Even though he lost in straight sets, the second and third were really close. He could have easily won one of those two sets, and maybe the match was going in a different direction,” said Djokovic. “He was a bit unlucky with the draw, because Zverev is in a great form, winning Rome, and he was serving extremely well. It’s tough to play Sascha when he’s feeling the ball so well. But it was great to watch. I don’t recall last time I actually watched a set of any match live on that level, other than Davis Cup matches,” he added. Alexander Zverev became only the third player to defeat Rafael Nadal at the French Open. Robin Soderling was the first player to do so in 2009, as Novak Djokovic is the only player to defeat him twice in Paris, in 2015 and 2021. “I don’t think he’ll play the French Open again in 2025” : Boris Becker on Rafael Nadal

“I don’t think he’ll play the French Open again in 2025” : Boris Becker on Rafael Nadal Former six-time Grand Slam champion Boris Becker has suggested that Rafael Nadal will not compete at the French Open in 2025. This is following the Spaniard’s straight sets loss at the hands of Alexander Zverev in the first round of the 2024 French Open. Rafael Nadal stated that he is yet to take a decision on his future, as he hinted at coming back to Paris to compete at Summer Olympics in a couple of months time. Boris Becker believes that the Spaniard could decide to end his career this season, as injuries continue to take a toll on his physical well-being. Rafael Nadal gave a good account of himself in the first round defeat to Alexander Zverev. The German wa always the heavy favorite heading into this encounter, given that Rafael Nadal had not played a Grand Slam match since the 2023 Australian Open. “I believe that Rafa will still play the Olympics at Roland-Garros. But I don’t think he’ll play the French Open again in 2025. Of course, he has emotions and probably had a sleepless night because he didn’t know whether it would be the last time,” Becker said. “He wanted to say goodbye well. Then his opponent was Zverev, against whom he can lose even on a good day. That’s why it was emotionally very difficult for Nadal,” he added. Boris Becker reveals how Alexander Zverev got the better of Rafael Nadal in the first round Boris Becker opined that Alexander Zverev got his tactics spot on in his first round victory against Rafael Nadal. The German stated that he worked his way into the rallies, by pushing Rafael Nadal further away from the baseline. Alexander Zverev grew comfortable as the match progressed, as he dominated their rallies. “Sascha started with a deep return and then worked his way into the rallies. The longer the rallies became over the course of the match, the better Zverev got. That’s unusual against Nadal – and he’s the king of Paris,” Becker opined. “He dominates the baseline and the centre of the court because he can then send his opponent running. It was the other way round today due to Zverev’s positioning,” Becker added. Alexander Zverev has been in pretty good form, winning the Italian Open a couple of weeks ago. With Novak Djokovic struggling for consistency this season, and with Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner struggling with injuries, this could be a great opportunity for the German. As for Rafael Nadal, he is expected to skip Wimbledon next month, and focus on the Paris Olympics. The event will be played on the clay courts once again. The Spaniard claimed a gold medal in the Singles Event at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, which was also his first appearance at the event. “I don’t know any other record in any other sport that equals that” : Boris Becker on Rafael Nadal’s incredible French Open record

“I don’t know any other record in any other sport that equals that” : Boris Becker on Rafael Nadal’s incredible French Open record Rafael Nadal is all set to compete in what could be his last appearance at the French Open. The Spaniard has been handed a very difficult first round opponent, as he faces Alexander Zverev on Monday. Former six-time Grand Slam champion Boris Becker has heaped praise on Rafael Nadal, and stated that his record at the French Open is the greatest in the history of the sport. Rafael Nadal has won the French Open on a staggering 14 occasions, as he has rightfully earned the title of the ‘King of the Clay.’ Boris Becker was in awe of the Spaniard’s incredible record in Paris, and stated that winning the French Open on 14 occasions is something which could never be matched in the sport. “You win it five times, that’s a lot, you win it 10 times, it’s impossible. Nadal’s won it 14 times. I don’t know any other record in any other sport that equals that,” Becker said to CNN. French Open is often regarded as the toughest Grand Slam of the year, given the nature of the clay courts. Rafael Nadal’s first triumph at the French Open came in 2005, and he has been dominating the tournament ever since. Boris Becker admits being surprised at discovering Rafael Nadal’s first round opponent Boris Becker admitted he was surprised at finding out Rafael Nadal’s first round opponent. The German stated that fans are used to seeing the Spaniard seeded first or second at his beloved slam, and being unseeded has left him with a tough draw this time around. “In the beginning, I didn’t believe it and thought that someone had made a mistake. Only then did I realize that Nadal wasn’t seeded this year. So it was logical. But at first I actually thought that they were both seeded – because you’re just used to Rafa being seeded first or second in Paris,” said Becker. Rafael Nadal has not played much tennis this year, as he has struggled to get going in the clay court season. The Spaniard face a second round exit at the hands of Hubert Hurkacz in the second round of the Italian Open, losing in straight sets. He did well at the Madrid Masters, reaching the fourth round, after getting through a couple of tricky battles. “Of course I am worried” : Novak Djokovic on his chances at the 2024 French Open

“Of course I am worried” : Novak Djokovic on his chances at the 2024 French Open Novak Djokovic’s title drought continues in 2024, as he is yet to win a title this season. The Serbian has not played much tennis this season, owing to his injury concerns. The world number one has admitted that he is worried about his title drought and lack of good form heading into the French Open. Novak Djokovic could manage to reach the semifinals of the Monte Carlo Masters, before losing in the third round at the Italian Open. Having not played much tennis in lead up to the second Grand Slam of the year, the veteran decided to play the Geneva Open which could help him regain his form. “Of course I am worried… I haven’t been playing good at all this year. [I’ve had] some [good] matches here and there but it is what it is. You have to accept it. I don’t consider myself a favourite there. I’m going to take it match by match and see how far I can go,” Djokovic said in his post match press conference. Novak Djokovic reveals he felt unwell before the semifinal clash Novak Djokovic revealed that he was not physically at his best during the semifinal clash. The Serbian stated that he was suffering from a stomach bug, which had troubled him all throughout the previous night. However, he credited his opponent for the victory, and the quality of tennis the Czech played in the semifinals. “It was a terrible feeling with stomach and health today… it was not a great night and today as well. But I don’t want to take anything away from his win, he deserved it. I don’t know what to think about this match to be honest. I want to forget about it and move on to Paris,” he added. Novak Djokovic enters the 2024 French Open as the top seed, and the defending champion. The Serb claimed the title last year, after he defeated Casper Ruud in the finals. The draw is wide open this time around, given that even the likes of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz have been dealing with injuries for the past couple of months. Moreover, the usual favorite Rafael Nadal has been nowhere close to his best, and he could well be knocked out in the first round, as he is scheduled to face Alexander Zverev. “Rafa doesn’t need to prove anything,” Alex Corretja believes Spaniard’s presence will be cherished at the French Open

“Rafa doesn’t need to prove anything,” Alex Corretja believes Spaniard’s presence will be cherished at the French Open Rafael Nadal is all set to feature in what could be his last French Open appearance. Having won 14 titles on the Parisian clay, the Spaniard has rightfully earned the title of ‘King of Clay.’ Former Spanish tennis player Alex Corretja believes that the 22-time Grand Slam champion has nothing left to prove. Speaking to Eurosport, Alex Corretja mentioned that Rafael Nadal should not feel the burden of being a 14-time champion in Paris. He believes that fans will be more than happy to just come and watch him play, which would also be a great thing for the tournament. After bowing out in the second round of the Italian Open, Rafael Nadal reached Paris a week before the tournament commences. He has also trained quite a bit on the main court to get used to the conditions. “We are waiting Rafa. Yes. Open arms for him. Everybody is hoping that he’s going to be healthy and that we know that he’s getting ready. He’s been practicing on Chatrier to test himself and I think he needs to let it go, just go for everything he has. I think it’s difficult to talk from the outside, but I hope that he can just go there and just do whatever he can,” said Corretja to Eurosport. “It’s going to be something unbelievable” : Corretja on Nadal’s participation at the French Open Alex Corretja believes that the atmosphere inside the stadium is going to unbelievable when Rafael Nadal steps on to the court. The Spaniard has already announced that he could well retire at the end of the season due to his recurrent injury issues. “I’m not expecting anything, it’s just go play and whatever comes is going to be a gift. He doesn’t need to prove anything else. Not even to himself, not even to the whole world,” Corretja said. “So if he is able to be there and play one match, two matches, three matches, every match, every time he jumps on court he will be given the recognition he deserves. It’s going to be a party. It’s going to be something unbelievable and the crowd is going to be crazy with him. That’s why we need Rafa in the tournament. I think it’s going to be a major thing to have him in Roland-Garros this year,” he added. Rafael Nadal was defeated in the second round of the Italian Open by Hubert Hurkacz in straight sets. The Spaniard did have a couple of chances in the opening set, but failed to convert any of his break points. The veteran’s best run of form came at the Madrid Masters, where he reached the last 16, losing to Jiri Lehecka in straight sets. The 37-year-old has been practicing at a very high intensity over the past week, as he gears up for the French Open.

“I’m used to a really high standard in terms of expectations,” Novak Djokovic ‘disappointed’ after Monte Carlo exit

“I’m used to a really high standard in terms of expectations,” Novak Djokovic ‘disappointed’ after Monte Carlo exit Novak Djokovic suffered a shock defeat in the semifinals of the Monte Carlo Masters. The top seed was defeated by Casper Ruud in three sets, who will now face Stefanos Tsitsipas in the finals. Novak Djokovic continues to search for his first title of the season, however he leaves Monte Carlo with plenty of positives. The Serbian has gotten off to a sluggish start in 2024, losing in the semifinals of the 2024 Australian Open, and the third round of the Indian Wells Masters as well. The 24-time Grand Slam champion credited Casper Ruud for playing a disciplined match, and keep his nerve when it mattered the most. Novak Djokovic recovered well from a break down in the final set, however, a couple of unforced errors in his final service game handed his opponent a place in the finals. “Of course I’m disappointed to lose a match like this. It was close one. Congratulations to Casper. He played really good, especially in the beginning of the first and third, as well. I had my chances, but the last game was not great. Unforced errors and just he was solid I think until the last shot and deserved to win,” said Djokovic. “The positive thing is that I kind of managed to come back after losing the first set and really find the strength in the game,” he assessed. “So there are positives to take away from this tournament, for sure, but of course disappointed with the loss,” the Serbian said in his press conference. Novak Djokovic remains in hunt for his first title of the season Novak Djokovic admitted that by his usual lofty standards, his start to the 2024 season has not been great. However, he pointed out to the fact that he has played just three tournaments this year, which includes the Monte Carlo Masters. The Serbian hopes to build on his performance here in Monte Carlo, as he returned to the tour after almost a month. “I’m used to a really high standard in terms of expectations of the results, so not having a title is, maybe comparing to the last 15 years, not a great season at all,” he said. “But I had semis of Australia, semis here. I only played three tournaments this year [also Indian Wells], so of course it’s normal to expect that you have some seasons where you don’t start well, and this is the one,” said Djokovic. “Hopefully I can pick up, in terms of results, I can build from here, because I played some good tennis. Hopefully in the next tournaments I’ll be able to play even better,” he added. Novak Djokovic will next compete at the Madrid Masters, which commences at the end of the month. He is also expected to play the Italian Open, before he moves onto the all-important French Open. The Serbian lifted his third French Open title last time around, as he defeated Casper Ruud in the finals. “I don’t think I am still at my top level” : Novak Djokovic gives honest verdict after storming into Monte Carlo quarterfinals

“I don’t think I am still at my top level” : Novak Djokovic gives honest verdict after storming into Monte Carlo quarterfinals Novak Djokovic stormed into the quarterfinals of the Monte Carlo Masters, following his straight sets victory over Lorenzo Musetti on Thursday. The Serbian avenged his defeat from last year, when he lost to the Italian at the Monte Carlo Masters. Novak Djokovic stated that he still feels that he is yet to reach his top level. The Serbian has not had the best start to his season, losing in the semifinals of the Australian Open and the third round of the Indian Wells Masters. Lorenzo Musetti got off to a great start against the top seed in the last 16 clash in Monte Carlo, however, Novak Djokovic quickly turned things around to win the first set. The veteran stated that things can change quite rapidly on clay courts, and a break of serve is really not a big advantage as compared to other courts. The Serbian believes that his opponent lost his focus midway through the first set, which helped him turn the tide in his favor. “It was a little exchange with the crowd at 4-3, 40/0 for him in the first set and ever since then I gained momentum. He lost focus a little bit. He was the better player for those first seven games, played some great tennis. Played really good shots and made me run. But this is clay and obviously things can turn around very quickly and a break of serve is not as a big advantage on this surface compared to the other surfaces,” said Djokovic, when asked about how he turned things around in the first set. Novak Djokovic to face Alex de Minaur in the quarterfinals Novak Djokovic will face Alex de Minaur in the quarterfinals on Friday. The Australian defeated the top seed at the United Cup earlier this year, as their head to head is even at 1-1. The 25-year-old has been quite a consistent performer on the tour this season, winning the Mexican Open, and reaching the finals of the Rotterdam Open a couple of months ago. As stated by Novak Djokovic, the Serbian is yet to reach his top level. He is expected to gain more confidence, and get much more lethal as the tournament progresses. “I don’t think I am still at my top level but it was a great test today against a great player, a very talented player. I lost to him last year here, similar circumstances. I was a set and 4-2 up and I must say it was in the back of my mind when I was serving at 4-2, 40/15 and lost my serve today. I thought, ‘Oh no, hopefully this is not similar scenario like last year’. I am really glad to overcome the challenge and look forward to the next one,” Novak Djokovic on his defeat to Musetti last year. Novak Djokovic should prove too much of a challenge for Alex de Minaur, who is not among the best players on clay courts. However, expect the Australian to make a strong case for himself, as Novak Djokovic would need to be at his best to secure a safe passage into the semifinals. Novak Djokovic hopes to play Rafael Nadal one last time at the French Open: “It would be great to have another great encounter”

Novak Djokovic hopes to play Rafael Nadal one last time at the French Open: “It would be great to have another great encounter” Novak Djokovic returns to the tour once again this week at the Monte Carlo Masters. The Serbian is the top seed for the first of three Masters tournaments on clay courts. The 24-time Grand Slam champion last featured in action at the Indian Wells Masters, where he was defeated by Luca Nardi in three sets in the third round. Rafael Nadal announced last week that he would not be competing at the Monte Carlo Masters, as there are question marks as to whether he would ever play professional tennis again. In his pre-tournament interview, Novak Djokovic stated that it would be a shame if Rafael Nadal retires without playing at least one tournament. The Serbian hopes to play at least one more match with Rafael Nadal, and most preferably at Roland Garros. The two players have shared some epic encounters over the last decade and a half. “As a tennis fan I want him to play at least one more tournament before he retires. We all know what he’s done on clay in his career, particularly Roland Garros. That’s his goal, we all know that, he’s been saying it. For the sake of all tennis and Roland Garros in particular, we hope that he can play there. It would be great to have another great encounter,” said Djokovic to Eurosport in an interview. “He’s been always like an older brother to me” : Novak Djokovic on Nenad Zimonjic Novak Djokovic split with his long term coach Goran Ivanisevic last month. The Serbian is now working with Nenad Zimonjic, who was ranked number one in Doubles during his playing days. Novak Djokovic spoke about the influence the veteran has had on his life and career over the years. “We have known each other really well for more than 20 years. He’s been always like an older brother to me. A mentor, a friend, who always tried to help me as a person and as a player. When I stopped with Goran, I was starting my clay-court preparation in Belgrade and he was there. He came to the court, and we really enjoyed our collaboration, and I asked him to come here for a few weeks,” said Djokovic. “We are trying to make the most of it. He’s been giving me really useful advice to find the proper position when I’m approaching the net, and it’s something I’m not best at because I don’t play as many doubles matches,” he added. As for Novak Djokovic, he has not had an ideal start to his 2024 season. He has competed in just tournaments so far, losing to Jannik Sinner in the semifinals of the Australian Open. The 36-year-old will hope to return to his best at the Monte Carlo Masters this week, as he takes on the likes of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz who have dominated the tour over the past couple of months. Jannik Sinner’s coach believes the domination of Big Three- Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal will ‘never’ be seen again

Jannik Sinner’s coach believes the domination of Big Three- Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal will ‘never’ be seen again Jannik Sinner is enjoying a dream start to his 2024 campaign, as he recently claimed the 2024 Miami Open title. The Italian humbled Grigor Dimitrov in the finals in straight sets, as he blasted his way to the title, dropping just one set all week. The 2024 Australian Open champion has just faced one defeat so far in this season, and has won three of the four tournaments he has competed in. The likes of Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner and Holder Rune are often likened to the Big Three players- Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. Over the past season or two, we have seen the Jannik Sinner-Carlos Alcaraz rivalry really taking shape. However, Sinner’s coach, Darren Cahill believes that no player from the current generation should be compared to the Big Three- as their dominance was just surreal, and he does not expect it to repeat again. “Well, I don’t think anybody should be comparing this generation yet with Novak, Federer, Nadal. What they were able to achieve for so many years is remarkable. I don’t think we will ever see that domination again no matter what,” Cahill said. “They need time to establish themselves” : Darren Cahill on Sinner, Alcaraz and Rune Darren Cahill believes that the trio of Jannik Sinner, Holger Rune and Jannik Sinner need time to establish themselves on the tour. Moreover, he feels that they need to win consistently to be compared to the Big Three. In the past year, we witnessed Carlos Alcaraz get the better of Novak Djokovic in an epic five-set final at Wimbledon. Jannik Sinner outplayed the Serbian at the 2024 Australian Open earlier this year. There are already signs of the two players taking over the center stage, however, Darren Cahill urges caution to not get carried away. “I wouldn’t start comparing what Carlos or Jannik or Holger are doing just yet to the generation prior, because I think that’s unfair. They need time to establish themselves. The level is right up there, but they need to win a lot more before you start comparing them to those boys,” he said.
